How 4 Letter Words builds, validates, scores, and updates its 5,915-word English dataset for Scrabble, WWF, crosswords, and word games.

What this word list contains
4 Letter Words uses a local, English-only dataset containing 5,915 unique four-letter entries. The browser searches this bundled data directly, so finder results and public word-list pages use the same source instead of separate editorial lists.
The current snapshot was generated on June 16, 2026. It combines membership information from multiple game-oriented dictionaries so a word can be shown as valid in one game and absent from another.
Dictionary coverage
The dataset records separate membership flags for:
- Scrabble US — 4,247 entries from the North American tournament-oriented list.
- Scrabble UK — 5,662 entries from the broader international list.
- Words With Friends — 4,587 entries.
- NYT Crossplay — a more conservative subset used for familiar crossword-style play.
- All dictionaries — the 5,915-entry union used by the default finder.
A word appearing on this site is not automatically valid in every game. Check the dictionary badges on a result before using it in competitive play, and treat the official rules of the specific game as the final authority.
Scores
Each entry stores a standard Scrabble-style score and a separate Words With Friends score. The site does not estimate those values from popularity or frequency. It adds the published tile values for the four letters, without board multipliers, bingo bonuses, or position-specific bonuses.
How results are generated
The finder normalizes input to the letters A–Z, then applies every selected constraint together: exact positions, starts, endings, required letters, excluded letters, sequences, racks, repeated-letter rules, and dictionary choice. Public pages such as “words ending in V” call the same matching logic.
Letter-rack pages are intentionally limited to a small curated set. Custom racks remain available in the interactive finder, but they do not create unlimited public URLs. This keeps the published collection useful, stable, and free of empty or near-duplicate pages.
Updates and corrections
The source date is recorded in the generated data file and in the sitemap. We review the list when a source dictionary changes or when a result is reported as incorrect. A correction should include the word, the game or dictionary, and a link or citation to the relevant official word authority.
This site is an independent reference tool and is not affiliated with Scrabble, Words With Friends, or The New York Times.
Using the data responsibly
Word-game dictionaries differ by region, edition, and product. Use the broad “All Dictionaries” setting to explore possibilities, then switch to the exact game dictionary before making a final move. For crosswords and everyday vocabulary, the narrower NYT-style subset usually removes many obscure tournament words.
